  • 1901 Born in Washington, D.C., to William Ross and Mamie Lucille Patterson
  • 1915 Attended Prairie View Normal and Industrial Institute in Texas and earned a teaching certificate
  • 1923 Earned a doctorate in veterinary medicine from Iowa State University
  • 1927 Earned a Master of Science degree from Iowa State University
  • 1928 Appointed head of veterinary division at Tuskegee Institute
  • 1932 Earned a Ph.D. in veterinary pathology from Cornell University
  • 1935 Appointed President of Tuskegee Institute
  • 1935 Married Catherine E. Moton
  • 1943 Founded the United Negro College Fund
  • 1944 Launched UNCF’s first national campaign to raise funds for twenty-seven small private, historically black colleges and universities
  • 1953 Appointed President of the Phelps-Stokes Fund
  • 1964 Appointed CEO and President of the United Negro College Fund
  • 1973 Appointed Chairman of The Robert R. Moton Memorial Institute
